Historical Downtown Swansboro
Have you been to one of the oldest festivals in North Carolina yet? Why wait…. It’s coming up second weekend of October… THE 58th SWANSBORO MULLET FESTIVAL OF NORTH CAROLINA.
No it’s not the hairstyle… but was started as a celebration 58 years ago by the residents of Swansboro after the completion of the bridge across the White Oak River in Swansboro.
Well, that first Swansboro Mullet Festival was so much fun that they decided to have it every year on the second Saturday in October. So, here we are today. Originally, it was just a big cookout, but now the Mullet Festival is much more than that. Oh sure, you can still get your fried Mullet cooked up by the Rotary Club of Jacksonville with the support of those awesome US Marines on hand, but in addition you can also see tons of arts and crafts, kids can create crafts, watch local performers and take a sit and listen to the line of beach music bands filling the salt air.
Members of the Swansboro Festival Committee are busy making final plans for the 58th Annual Mullet Festival planned for October 13th and 14th in historic downtown Swansboro.
The 2012 celebration will begin with the closing of Hwy 24 in order for the parade to lead the way downtown. Parade applications are still available, so get your with your organization or promote your business in all the fun to be had while strolling through the parade line. Parade applications are still available on the festival website – www.swansborofestivals.com or by calling 910-326-7370
Since parking is at a premium in the downtown area….a shuttle service will carry festival goers from Swansboro Middle School to the festival area. White Oak Rampage will operate the shuttle on a rotating basis.
In the Children’s area a number of inflatable rides will be set up for kids to climb, bounce and slide on. A number of activities will also take place throughout the weekend including the popular “Mullet Toss” and face painting.
Duplin Wine will be on hand to sell the 2012 Swansboro Festival Wine “Smooth Sailing” which commemorates the Swansboro Festivals.
The music and entertainment is always a big hit of the festival, and this year’s line up is sure to please the crowd. The Rewind Band will perform on Saturday from 10:00-1:00, The Attractions will be on stage from 1:00-4:00, Carol Newton and the 5th Avenue Band will perform from 4:00-7:00 and the headline band will be THE FANTASTIC SHAKERS closes at 10:30 p.m. On Sunday the Band of Oz will perform from 11:00-2:00 and the Holiday Band will entertain from 2:00-5:00 p.m.
Over 100 craft vendors along with food vendors will line to streets of downtown Swansboro, and of course the famous Rotary fish fry will give everyone something to enjoy. Admission to the festival is free. Downtown streets would be closed to vehicular traffic both days. Visitors are asked to leave their pets at home.
With MacDaddy’s as presenting sponsor and other sponsor support from businesses like Onslow Tourism, Island Essentials, First Citizens, Marine Federal, Tideland News, and many more… the Swansboro festival would not be as successful has it has been for many years and we look forward to the future.
